The works shown concern the transition from the early cut-out works to faces and reality, the introduction of energy lines and the independent placement of lines as an individual image, the outline of masks, the realisation of a zero and a one and the combination of spirit and the physical universe.
The artist works in oils, alkyds and acrylics on canvas, paper and panels. His works vary in size up to large installation works. He also produces three dimensional works in boxes. Commission works for companies or office areas can be arranged in consultation with the client.
The artist has always remarked that his work has carried the title SPIRITUAL LOGIC. Combining geometrics with reality and the inner spirit Anthony John Gray has created his own unique visual language. Some of his work are in ongoing series such as THE BRIDGE or FLYING COLOURS. Some works form triptychs and diptychs and can be seen on this site.

Anthony John Gray - Paintings
Illustrated are a selection of paintings from 1986 to present.
Some of the works have details to view and some do not depending on the complexity of the piece. The works are not in any chronological sequence. All paintings are traditionally painted by hand, oils on canvas with sizes in given inches.
Anthony John Gray - three dimensional
In the three dimensional work shown the artist has converted some images into three dimensional pieces and also created new works suitable for this format.
From the working stage specially prepared boards are coated with hand made papers. These are then cut shaped and sanded to the desired pieces required. Normal painting procedures are then applied, each piece being handled like a canvas. When all the sections are complete the finished pieces are then layered and stuck together and then placed in a wall box.
In New York with cubes different thickness of cubes were built, painted and then layered into the painting structure. Adventures on a four bar theme required 2000 pieces to be hand cut and shaded in grey on a 1 to 10 scale. This was then interlaced with the rainbow structures. The artist has also inserted this type of three dimensional work into tables.
Commissions can be accepted for this type of work as one off pieces or a series for private clients or companies. Tables can also be produced in strict editions of low numbers depending on the complexity of the piece.
Anthony John Gray - works on paper
The works on paper cover masks, faces and lines. Many of these are connected to the main paintings, some elements being left out and some added. Some deal with pressure, penetration and religious themes, sometimes these are connected to new larger works on canvas.
The majority of these remain as works in their own right, in some cases ideas and the paintings themselves have been done on paper to keep the image in a smaller format. Also working on paper allows a more fluid approach in some instances as the areas are smooth and different effects can be obtained.
Some of these works are in suites of four matching pieces as well as diptychs and triptychs.
Anthony John Gray - early art
Paintings shown are from 1977 to 1986 and only a few examples are given. Some of these works have been in exhibitions at New York, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago.
A vast majority of the earlier cut-out works are catalogued with the artist.
Anthony John Gray - corporate art
The artist can install large corporate works on a commission basis. This includes the planning of large- scale works and if required editions to match where smaller images could be placed in separate areas.
The artist has installed corporate works for such companies as the IRT Corporation in San Diego and The Institute of Nutritional Sciences in California.
Anthony John Gray - portrait art
The artist can undertake portraits on commission. He mainly works with children and places them in paintings rather than conventional portraits. The idea for this is that you get two paintings, one of the child commissioned and a separate painting which the child inhabits. There are many ways in which this can be undertaken from diptychs to opening panels.
In the painting Michelle the idea was to have her standing in front of her own portrait in which the coming events in her life have yet to be fulfilled. Emma was painted on an opening panel revealing her appearing out of a landscape, at either side cut out of the hedges are profiles of the parents.
A moment in time was commissioned for three children. The concept of the painting was to have each child supporting themselves in blocks of their own worlds. Also, to put behind them, the landscape from the country in which they were born, one in Istanbul, another in England and the third in New York. Also incorporated at the bottom of the plinth were objects from the parents travels forming a connection with the children but not directly related. There is also a clock, which was given to each child to celebrate the year 2000 which operates as a central point on the top of the plinth. Also in the picture is a Childs dolls house disguised as a building in New York. In the centre block the youngest child suspends herself in another universe floating above mountains, from her hands rainbows shower down enclosing her lower self, other rainbows bend and hold the blocks of her brother and sister suspending them in the air. Rainbows form arches above holding a half moon. Behind are trees with full moon behind, the rainbows forming barriers and bonds with her brother and sister. Underneath the clock, common to all, comes up to midnight.
Anthony John Gray - hand edition art
With hand painted editions the editions are kept very small and in some cases the artist only produces 5 pieces.
The original master painting is created and then by a time consuming process each section is painted on another paper until the complete edition is finished. This process involves only the artist and the use of artist quality materials. These editions are not prints but individual pieces created by the artist and only small variations occur between each piece.
Ordering a hand finished edition piece normally requires 14 days. Please enquire for pricing and availability of editions available.
All paintings are inches unless stated cms.
Anthony John Gray - silkscreen print art
Since 1979 the artist has only produced 2 silkscreen editions both of which have been sold out. The first was based on LIBERATED DESIRES and produced by Superior in Chicago. The second was OASIS, which was based on the idea of a safe place, this edition was produced by Harwood King in the UK.
A new edition is planned for late 2002 based on the work MADONNA AND CHILD.
Anthony John Gray - Giclee editions
With Giclee editions a transparency is made from the original painting and transferred onto computer. The artist then works on the computer to eliminate any faults on the transparency and prepares the image for transfer to the Giclee machine. The print is then digitally produced using lightfast inks which are then sprayed onto the paper, each final piece is then checked by the artist.
There is no dot process as the inks form solid areas giving the print strength of colour similar to silk screen printing. Illustrated are 3 Giclee Editions currently available, they are:
1. TIME WILL TELL.
2. SIDE BY SIDE.
3. THE GATEWAY.
All of the editions are produced under the supervision of the artist and on Somerset papers with borders, numbered and signed. Please enquire for availability and pricing.
Anthony John Gray - art sketches
Sketches shown are from current projects yet to be transferred to canvas.
The idea of the zero and one progresses through a new series of works encompassing binary codes, viruses and bar codes. The geometric ideas also continue with religious interpretations especially with the design of the cross and its origins (see Unification and the Vacuum of silence).
Also the artist is undertaking a series of paintings concerning the great Cathedrals and Churches. This is divided into 2 sections. 1, a contemporary series of 7 works on board which will form the basis for a series of silkscreen editions. 2, a major series on canvas. Both series carry the title of The Pilgrimage.
Please contact the artist for further information.
